Netiquette is actual or recommended codes of behavior, conduct, and communication for people who interact over the Internet, in cyberspace, or in networked environments. In society, the rules and conventions of face-to-face etiquette that regulate social and professional behavior, and that are enforced by group pressure, have developed over time and in particular contexts. Although there are different social contexts in electronic and online environments, such as e-mail, newsgroups, online courses, and salons, for the user these are largely mediated through a device, such as a computer monitor displaying text, with few reminders of the differences among these environments and of the social and cultural rules that prevail in them. Different conventions also apply in the business, educational, personal, and public domains.
