Alternative Secondary Education
Alternative education requires more than a change in the structure of the school. To be considered an alternative school, there must be a difference in the learning process. Alternative educational programs are student centered, and instruction is modified for the student's interests and needs. A distance education school could be very traditional.
History
Historically, parents have sought schools in which they could be involved in governance and their children could be self-expressive. In some areas, alternative schools are equated with students lacking achievement or behaving poorly. However, alternative education is appropriate for a wide range of learner abilities and needs, and is not limited to at-risk students with behavioral and academic problems.
