Library Technologies

Library technologies include a variety of systems for automating the delivery and maintenance of library resources and services. As in many other areas of information technology, the emergence of the Internet, and the World Wide Web in particular, has revolutionized the ways library resources can be used and managed.

Online Catalog

Almost all libraries have moved the information about their collections out of card catalogs and made it available in online public access catalogs (OPACs). Initially, OPAC access required a dedicated terminal attached to a central computer. These terminals were typically available only at the library.
