Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE)

Founded in 1945 as the Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe, and later renamed the Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere, CARE is one of the world's largest humanitarian organizations. Now based in Geneva, Switzerland, CARE operates a variety of programs, including the original emergency aid programs as well as more recent education, healthcare, hunger, and human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) initiatives, in over 70 countries. The Cooperative's CARE Packages, though a trademarked term, have entered generic usage to include not only famine and disaster relief provisions, but also comfort packages sent to students, soldiers, and family.
