SAGE Business Cases: Women & Leadership Series

SAGE is pleased to launch Women & Leadership, a new teaching case series within SAGE Business Cases.

The idea for the series began with a meeting at the 2016 Annual Conference of the International Leadership Association in Atlanta, Georgia between SAGE editorial and Sherylle and Lisa. Discussions continued during the Women and Leadership Networking Luncheon and the idea to address the need for this essential content began to take shape. “It is important to have business cases that depict the realities that women leaders face,” says Dr. Tan, “as all students, both male and female, learn about and develop their leadership, they must be able to understand and see women in those leadership roles.” Further, “The cases and experiences of women in leadership do not often coincide with those of men. To fully understand leadership, we need to examine all points of view and look at it from a broad lens that considers gender.” 

In discussing this new series, Dr. DeFrank-Cole said: “There is a dearth of business cases written by women or about women. I am happy that SAGE is working to change this situation. With women representing around 5% of Fortune 500 CEOs, we need to encourage students to become leaders. Reading business cases that include women as leaders will enable students to imagine themselves in these types of positions in the future.”

    Sherylle J. Tan, Ph.D. is the Director of Internships and KLI Research at the Kravis Leadership Institute at Claremont McKenna College. Dr. Tan has over 15 years of experience in program evaluation and her current research focuses on undergraduate leadership education. At KLI, Dr. Tan oversees the KLI Internship program, longitudinal research on undergraduate leadership education, and program evaluations of all KLI leadership and social innovation programs. Much of Dr. Tan’s research focuses on applying developmental theory and methods to understanding the issues of leadership development, women and leadership, work and family, and child development. Most recently, Dr. Tan co-edited with Ron Riggio, Leader Interpersonal and Influence Skills: The Soft Skills of Leadership (2014). Dr. Tan is the Past-Chair of the Executive Leadership Team for the International Leadership Association Women and Leadership Affininity Group. 

    Dr. DeFrank-Cole previously worked as the Executive Director of the West Virginia statewide PROMISE Scholarship program; served as Assistant for Policy and Research under West Virginia Governor Bob Wise; worked at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In 2012 Dr. DeFrank-Cole was awarded a Fulbright Specialist Grant to teach Principles of Leadership to female students at the Royal University for Women in the Kingdom of Bahrain. She served as the 2015 chair of the Women and Leadership Affinity Group in the International Leadership Association and her research interests include the topics of women and leadership. In April 2017, she was awarded the Mary Catherine Buswell prize at WVU for outstanding service to women. She holds a doctoral degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.

    DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: May 31, 2019

    • We look for cases between 1,000 and 5,000 words.
    • Please include discussion questions and teaching notes.

    • Manuscripts are accepted through our ScholarOne portal
    • Authors receive decisions within 6-8 weeks of submission.
