      NARRATOR: At the Science Learning Center Northeast,CPD trainer Deborah Herridge is infesting the gardenwith multi-colored woollen caterpillars.For her delegates, it's not an infestation,but an investigation, part of her course,helping teachers learn to use the new APPcriteria for science.

      DEBORAH HERRIDGE: Counting caterpillarsis an investigation I use with younger children,and it takes them outdoors.And it's really an introduction to habitat and camouflage.And the idea is that the teacher will go and just placecaterpillars in the school grounds.And the children have a number of minutes

      DEBORAH HERRIDGE [continued]: in a relay to try and find as many as they can.All three starters, off you go.We've got very bright-colored ones.And we have more muted colors that wouldblend into the background.Combine them.

      NARRATOR: Each piece of sticky tape on the boardrepresents a two-minute time interval.

      DEBORAH HERRIDGE: So then we'll come back insideand say, OK, this is what you've come up with.Can anybody spot a pattern here?So we've made a kind of tally chart, haven't we?Can anybody spot any sort of pattern?We found most at the beginning, and then itbecame harder to find them.

      DEBORAH HERRIDGE [continued]: Is there another pattern?Bearing in mind, there are these colors, these dark greenand dark brown colors that--

      SPEAKER 1: We didn't see those till right in the end.

      DEBORAH HERRIDGE: We didn't see them until right at the end.If you were a caterpillar, which color would you rather be?You'd rather be dark green, wouldn't you?So you wouldn't be seen.So there's a whole avenue you could go down,of the biology content, looking at camouflage and adaptation.

      DEBORAH HERRIDGE [continued]: So there's that factual element to which colorcaterpillar would you like to be?And they might say, oh, we'd liketo be the sparkly pink one.Well, you'll get eaten pretty quickly.So you might be better off to be one of the brown ones.

      NARRATOR: The counting caterpillars investigationis just one of the exercises Deborahuses to help demonstrate to teachers that usingAPP in science is doable.And, in fact, the structures could already be in place.

      DEBORAH HERRIDGE: If we then turn the board aroundthrough 90 degrees, they've turned their tally chartinto a pictogram.What's it now?

      DEBORAH HERRIDGE: Easy, isn't it?So the caterpillars are represented as the bits of woolin a different way.Now, representing data in different waysis one of the key elements of the communication strandof the APP.So that's an early start to actually tickingoff and representing that area of data handling.

      DEBORAH HERRIDGE [continued]: The counting caterpillars is always a revelationwhen you turn the board around.Because there's that, [GASPS], oh, sort of moment.And I love that, because it's, yeah, it is that simple.And it's just having somebody to show you that.It's so easy.Everybody can do that in their classroom.

      NARRATOR: Deborah became a fan of APPafter realizing how it encourages practical scienceinvestigations like the caterpillar exercise.

      DEBORAH HERRIDGE: If you're doing practical science,then the evidence you need for your APP assessments justgenerates itself.And it's just being aware of what you're looking out for.So it's being a little bit more tuned in to the criteriaand what you need to be looking out for as evidence.If you're a teacher who's not doing any practical work,then you're going to find it a little trickier.

      SPEAKER 2: I thought it was quite a good toolto introduce fair testing and measuring.

      SPEAKER 3: How excited the children would be actuallygoing outside, and hands-on in digging,and being able to find things, hopefully.

      SPEAKER 4: This morning, when I came,I was quite full of trepidation, actually, about APP.And now I feel quite reassured.
