Doheny, Estelle (1875–1958)
Carrie Estelle Betzold married Edward Laurence Doheny on October 25, 1918. She became the wife of a wealthy oil tycoon and spent her busy life accompanying her husband by traveling, entertaining, and assisting his enterprises. The couple built magnificent homes on their Beverly Hills Ranch and Ferndale Ranch near Santa Paula, California. Her Chester Place home contained a private deer park containing tame deer, monkeys, and a spectacular steel conservatory housing a collection of rare palm trees, tropical trees, and orchids. Mrs. Doheny's orchid collection exceeded 5,000 specimens.
Estelle was a philanthropist. She funded many charitable organizations and was generous to Southern California churches. Her donations helped build the Los Angeles Orphanage, the Orthopedic and Children's Hospital, and the St. Vincent's Seminary. In Washington, D.C., She ...
