Prostitution in 19Th-Century Texas
Much like today, 19th-century Texas formed a mosaic of areas that could easily be compared and contrasted. The parched landscape of West Texas seemed the complete opposite of the lush piney woods found near her eastern border. There were ranchers and there were oilmen, and the interests of each routinely collided. Texas was a place of city and country folk, and the two groups ritualistically debated issues of religion, politics, or the finer aspects of high culture such as whether a bowl of Texas red chili should be served with beans or without.
