Priest, Ivy Baker (1905–1975)
Ivy Baker was born in Kimberly, Utah, in 1905 into a poor mining family. Her father, Orange Baker, mined gold and copper. When his mine petered out, they moved to Coalville, then to Bingham Canyon. Her mother, Clara Baker nee Fernley, opened their home in Bingham as a boarding house.
Ivy's mother provided the impetus to her daughter's future political aspirations. Ivy witnessed her mother's successful efforts in the election of their family physician, Dr. Straupp, to the office of mayor of Bingham. Her mother had become frustrated with the poor condition of the streets in their Utah town and traded her support for Dr. Straupp for his promise to improve them upon his election.
