Sotomayor, Sonia

Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America Sonia Sotomayor is a woman of many “firsts.” In 1992, at the age of 38 years, Sotomayor became the first American of Puerto Rican descent to be appointed to the federal bench in New York State, when she was commissioned as a judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The youngest judge in the court and the first Puerto Rican woman to sit as a judge in a U.S. federal court, she served there until 1998, when she was confirmed to occupy a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
