On August 1, 1981, MTV, short for Music Television, played its first music video, the Buggles’ Video Killed the Radio Star. In the three decades since then, network executives have transformed MTV from a channel that entertained viewers with videos into a network of channels (including MTV2, MTV Europe, and mtvU) known instead for its reality television programming. MTV remains an influential force in American culture, and the network's representation of women has, especially in the 21st century, garnered criticism.
