This chapter addresses youth development from the perspective of health and health care. Because the processes and structures fostering youth development are often viewed as social phenomena, modern medicine and health care are sometimes considered peripheral or tangential to youth development. However, we shall demonstrate that both the health of and health care for youth benefit from a youth development approach. Furthermore, professionals concerned about the health of the next generation of adults increasingly apply the principles of youth development in direct health care services as well as in policy development.
