This chapter outlines a progressive, participatory and positive model of youth justice called ‘Children First Youth Work’ We challenge the negative, punitive and correctionalist nature of much contemporary youth justice practice in England by reasserting the status of the youth as a child in psychological, emotional, physical and social terms and thus the need to respond to children who offend with this status as primary – hence the apparent paradox of children first youth work.
