Introduction

This chapter seeks to engage with debates around the meaning of contemporary youth work and look at ways in which the radical agenda of many practitioners and theorists can be maintained and enhanced in the unsympathetic environment of contemporary neo-liberalism (Slovenko and Thompson, 2016). It will do so by examining European notions of social pedagogy (drawing particularly on Danish and German traditions) and examining the ways in which social pedagogy draws on some of the same traditions as English youth work (radical youth work, the writings of Paulo Freire, (1973) and Skott-Myhre (2006)).
