INTRODUCTION

Just as expectations around open access to research data have risen in recent years, so too have expectations for robust metadata and documentation that provide a complete picture of a dataset from its inception through data publication and beyond. Researchers increasingly want access to detailed information about what happens in the early phases of survey design and implementation: the sampling process, questionnaire development, fieldwork, post-survey data processing, weighting – basically all elements of the survey data life cycle.
