Financial management is important to all organizations because it ensures their sustainability. Therefore, all organizations – both in sport and outside of the sporting context – benefit from solid financial management. For the purposes of this chapter, financial management means planning and implementing the efficient and effective use of financial resources to achieve the goals of the organization (which can also be financial in nature). It is important to make this clear from the outset because the major textbooks in sport finance (Fried, Deschriver, and Mondello, 2003; Howard and Crompton, 2005; Stewart, 2007; Winfree and Rosentraub, 2011) often give little attention to the planning and management aspects of sport finance.
