INTRODUCTION

The focus of this chapter is on participatory research (PR) in the context of outdoor environments. The chapter draws on research with young children (aged 3 and under) who are engaged in outdoor play and reference is made to data from a recent research project with children taking place in England and Greece. In particular, we identify and critically consider two significant aspects of participatory research that have resonance for outdoor investigations in general: children's ‘voices’ and the significance of silence and children's agency within PR projects.
