INTRODUCTION

During recent decades, we have seen a decline in opportunities for children in Western countries to play outdoors (Christensen and O'Brien, 2003; Clements, 2004; Holloway and Valentine, 2000; Karsten, 2005; Sandberg, 2012). This decline has led to concerns that children are becoming discouraged from playing in nature environments.1 In the book Last Child in the Woods (Louv, 2008), the author paints a dystopian picture of the consequences of this loss and argues for a back-to-nature policy.
