Most food is produced in rural areas, and consumed by the growing proportion of the world's population living in urban centres. But there is often an assumption that this is a simple and unidirectional connection. This chapter examines how a more dynamic understanding of rural–urban linkages contributes to the analysis of food security in both urban and rural areas, with a focus on how rural transformations help shape both food production and consumption.
