The SAGE Handbook of Nature offers an ambitious retrospective and prospective overview of the field that aims to position Nature, the environment and natural processes, at the heart of interdisciplinary social sciences. Introduction

This chapter explores theoretically and conceptually the transformations and evolution of resource communities, with an emphasis on how they are able to cope with pressures to change. For this purpose, the chapter reviews the literature on resilience, a notion that refers to the ability of a system to cope with change. Research on resilience has expanded from being focussed on social-ecological systems to community resilience and regional resilience. As a concept, resilience covers various ways for a social-ecological system or a region to deal with pressures to change, from resistance to shock to recovery and capacity to adaptation and adaptability.
