This extensive Handbook brings together different aspects of critical pedagogy with the aim of opening up a clear international conversation on the subject, as well as pushing the boundaries of current understanding by extending the notion of a pedagogy to multiple pedagogies and perspectives. Would it be so far afield to relate Paulo Freire's (1983) ‘The Importance of the Act of Reading’ and his return to ‘the most remote experiences of childhood’ (ibid.: 5) with that of a psychoanalyst who listens in on a case history? And, given that Freire mainly wished to comment on the significance of reading to his own life and to the creation of his pedagogical acts, might I, too, take a chance and freely associate to signs along the way and ask the affecting question, why is there a desire to read?
