Quality Movement, Evolution of
Total quality management (TQM) has been one of the most widespread management approaches worldwide during the past three decades. Even though quality management approaches have been recognized and utilized by industry since the 1930s, the arrival of TQM in the last part of the 1980s opened a new era in the quality movement. This entry reviews the quality evolution that has taken place during the past decades. Because Japan played a significant role in the quality movement, and in particular in “shaping” TQM, the Japanese approach to quality management is provided first. Following that, the Western approach of quality management is described as a continuation of the quality movement evolution.
