Learning Communities
A contemporary learning community (LC) is characterized by a group of students who form or are assigned to a learning-based peer network prior to the start of a course or program of study. Learning communities are formed on the basis of course subject, program concentration or degree plan, and mentorship processes, or as interdisciplinary teams across multiple programs. These cohorts can begin and end with a specific course or a shared social-learning goal, or continue uninterrupted throughout an undergraduate or graduate degree plan. The rationale for LCs includes improved academic success, increased retention at the course and program levels, increased student satisfaction, and increased student–student and student–faculty interaction within and outside a course or program.
