Language and Literacy
Language incorporates vocabulary, word choice, sentence construction, paragraph development, revision, and, eventually, higher level considerations such as tone and voice. Literacy is generally taken to mean the ability to read and write at a basic level, but in this entry, the definition is expanded to include a student’s ability to decode, comprehend, and think critically about what he or she reads, paired with the skills to write with a purpose for a specific audience and to write informatively and persuasively in response to reading.
In all higher education settings, including online classrooms, introductory writing and mathematics courses tend to be “barrier courses” that can cause distress for students and keep them from moving forward.
