Higher Learning Commission
The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) accredits postsecondary institutions in 19 states, mainly in the Midwest and West. As an accrediting agency for distance learning and online schools, it plays a role in establishing credibility and reliability for online education. This entry provides a brief history of the HLC and describes the process to receive accreditation through the HLC.
Educational institutions and programs, both traditional and online, seek accreditation to provide quality assurance to students and consumers who might enroll or otherwise use their resources. In the United States, there are two types of accreditation agencies—(1) regional and (2) national.
