Credit Hours
A credit hour (also referred to as the Carnegie unit) is a traditional unit of measurement for time in a course or other learning experience. While sometimes understood as a measurement of contact hours with the instructor or the time in which students attend class sessions, current use of the term credit hour expands beyond this. As such, the contemporary use of the term continues to be as a measure of time, but this is often connected to a learner’s time on the task—the hours devoted to focused learning for a given course or other learning activity (internship, thesis, independent study, etc.).
