Assistive Technologies
Assistive technologies are devices or tools used to aid persons with certain disabilities. The technologies and the populations they serve are as diverse as the types or kinds of disabilities that exist. Assistive technologies are common, and persons with or without disabilities come in contact with such devices on a daily basis. Assistive technologies can include tangible devices or software applications and are designed to provide practical enablement for persons with varied forms of disabilities. These technologies can facilitate learning, task completion, and mobility for persons with auditory and visual impairments, intellectual/brain-based disabilities, and physical impairments, whether permanent or temporary. Functionality is key in the implementation of assistive technologies, whether the goal is to achieve independence or to increase social interaction and communication.
