Communitarianism
Definition
Communitarianism represents the body of ideas associated with the broad philosophical, political and sociological tradition in which there is a central and defining emphasis of the inherent sociality of humans. As a consequence of this key emphasis and domain assumption, the embedded individuals and groups that make up a society or community are viewed first and foremost as products of that determining culture. Both normatively and sociologically, communitarianism is critical of individualistic, liberal, rational choice theories of social behaviour. In terms of its ideological and political freight, it may be characterized by both neo-conservative and to a lesser degree, radical socialist and social democratic variants. Communitarian ideas feed into much of the policy discourse around local policing and community safety.
