  • The use of artificial miscarriage or selective abortion is common in China. Since the adoption of China's One Child Policy, couples and individuals have been influenced or tempted to opt for artificial miscarriage as a family planning option when faced with demanding procreative or reproductive problems. The choice to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term is not easily available to many women because various factors, including municipal law, socioeconomics, culture, and ethics, come into play. Many women in China have to make such decisions, even if it means opting for clandestine methods of terminating unwanted pregnancies, regardless of the trimester. Artificial miscarriage is an unnatural process of ending a pregnancy and may involve the use of medical instruments, surgery, or the ingestion of pills (e.g., Mifeprex or Misoprostol).
