Defining a profession is of extreme importance for a number of reasons. First, it sets the parameters on what laypersons expect from that profession. Second, without clearly identified parameters, practitioners themselves suffer from a lack of professional identity and direction, standards of practice, and a clear and precise sense of mission or calling. Without definitive parameters, a specific profession is set adrift in a world full of professions—one in a field of many.
