MINNESOTA IS A state in the central northern part of the continental United States. It is bordered to the east by the Canadian states of Ontario and Manitoba, by Lake Superior and Wisconsin to the east, Iowa to the south and South and North Dakota to the west. It became the 32nd state of the union in 1858 and its name is derived from a word used by the Sioux people who previously owned the land. The state has a land area slightly in excess of 87,000 square miles and a population of just under 5 million.
