Public Opinion on Juvenile Justice Issues
Over the past quarter century, the American public has grown progressively more conservative in its ideology and more punitive toward juvenile delinquents. Without question, America is one of the most punitive industrialized nations in the world. In terms of the number of people incarcerated, it is second only to Russia. Nevertheless, the American public continues to call for ever more punitive sanctions to combat criminal activity. Some observers now contend that the purpose of criminal sanctions has changed from righting wrongs committed against society to incapacitation and retribution.
