Girls and Boys Town
The year was 1917, and America was experiencing social crises associated with World War I, including a continued concern with the problems of wayward and delinquent youth. As an assistant pastor and director of an Omaha, Nebraska, hotel for disadvantaged workers, Father Edward Flanagan recognized the relationship between childhood problems and difficulties later in life and decided to intervene with boys before their troubles became serious. He opened Father Flanagan's Boys Home, with the goal of providing a caring, homelike atmosphere, education, and life skills to abused, abandoned, neglected, handicapped, and otherwise at-risk boys.
