Introduction

Use of proteomics as a tool to discover new diagnostic markers is drawing significant interest, despite the emphasis on genomics. Whereas genomics provides a basis for the development of new nucleic-acid-based diagnostic tests, proteomics focuses on proteins for the development of new protein-based diagnostics and expression proteomics focuses on determining the quantitative differences in expression of proteins characteristic of normal and pathological states. A number of clinical proteomics business models exist, including tools companies, service companies, companies developing diagnostic assays based upon proprietary technology, and hybrid companies.
