Introduction

The Italian pharmaceutical market is the fourth largest in Europe and the sixth largest in the world. Steady growth in the second half of the 1990s lifted the Italian market to third place in Europe and fifth place in the world. As recently as 2001, pharmaceutical sales grew by 32%.

These trends may suggest that the pharmaceutical market in Italy is a favorable environment for drug companies. However, pharmaceutical manufacturers face many challenges in doing business in Italy.
