Abstract
We started with how the value of outcomes changes over temporal distance and ended up with what we hope is a step toward a general theory of psychological distance. There are different psychologies for the different dimensions of psychological distance – temporal, spatial, social, and hypotheticality. Without denying the uniqueness of each of these dimensions and more specific aspects comprising those dimensions, we believe they all entail transcending the present through constructing mental models of what is not directly experienced. The farther removed an object is from me on any distance dimension, the higher (more abstract) the level of mental construal of that object.
