Mapping the history of public administration of a vast region such as Asia is indeed an enormous task, especially since the region consists of nations that demonstrate significant racial, ethnic, cultural and political differences. Such a diverse group defies generalizations but some common features are nonetheless identified in this chapter. In order to provide a little more specificity and as a way of providing examples from countries that are especially important in Asia, I have chosen to focus my attention primarily on China, India and Pakistan.
