Intergroup Dyadic Interactions
Intergroup Dyadic Interactions
Abstract
This chapter reviews the effects of prejudice on intergroup interactions. We first offer a brief history of research on interactions between members of non-stigmatized groups and members of stigmatized groups. Then, we examine processes that influence the behavior that non-stigmatized individuals display during intergroup interactions. We then consider how stigmatized individuals influence the bias expressed by their non-stigmatized interaction partners during, as well as the behavioral dynamics of, intergroup interactions. After, we explore interaction dynamics beyond bias expression; namely, individuals’ cognitive and affective experiences during and after the interaction. Last, we offer some new directions for research that we believe will provide a richer understanding of interaction dynamics for both members of stigmatized and non-stigmatized groups.
