What is the condition of the field of Physical Education? How is it adapted to the rise of kinesiology, sport and exercise science and human movement studies over the last thirty years? Bodies of research literature are not simply (and, sometimes, not even) accounts of the state of knowledge about something. In retrospect, they may be more profitably understood as artefacts of particular historical events, periods or struggles. This is perhaps especially true in educational research although this is not a view which will be welcomed by all readers.
