Iinitially wrote this piece in spring, 2003 in order to formally inaugurate my tenure as the Leon Forrest Professor of African American Studies at Northwestern University. Luckily, my endowed chair represented more than a name from a distant past, for the late novelist and department chair had recruited me to Northwestern. Thus, the event occasioned multiple, bittersweet rememberings.
