The globalized nature of work in the new millennium implies that human resource management, psychological theories of personnel and individual behaviour in the workplace have to change and evolve. We provide an overview of research that has been conducted on expatriates over the past five decades. It is our aim to highlight some of the key findings in expatriate management and to provide a critical appraisal of research needs. We first review who expatriates are. Then we discuss two main complementary IWO psychology interventions: expatriate staffing (e.g., expatriate selection; personality-based predictors; criterion-related validities) and training (e.g., cross-cultural training; culture assimilators; effectiveness of training interventions). A discussion of the criterion domain for expatriates follows. This section considers (1) expatriate satisfaction and early returns, (2) adaptation and adjustment, and (3) job performance.
