Of all the areas encompassed by Material Culture Studies, the area of architectural Modernism is peculiarly underdeveloped. That this should be so is remarkable considering the importance of anthropological and archaeological studies for the development of Modernism in general. From the very beginnings of these disciplines Ethnography and Archaeology's pre-occupation with built forms went hand in hand with the development of modern architectural principles and the eventual development of Modernism in the twentieth century.
