Today, at the dawn of the twenty-first century, most international relations (IR) specialists accept that ethnicity and nationalism are highly relevant to their field. Yet, only a decade ago, IR studies on these topics were few and far between. It was only with considerable delay that the IR literature vindicated Donald Horowitz's (1985) comment in the mid-1980s about ethnicity's having ‘fought and bled and burned its way into public and scholarly consciousness’.
