Many social stratification studies in contemporary Japan recognize occupational status, blue-collar versus white-collar jobs, for distinguishing among and between classes (e.g., Hashimoto, 2003; Ishida, 1989; Roberson, 1998; Sugimoto, 1997). Japanese working-class men and women are generally considered as “having lower educations, incomes, home ownership, investment, and luxury possessions” (Roberson, 2003:128). According to Ishida (1993), firm size is also a “factor differentiating employees within classes” (p. 224). This is particularly important with respect to child care policies.
