Introduction

‘Global rethink on PhD as it loses its relevance’ was the headline in the higher education supplement of the Australian Financial Review (Mather, 2010). Although the broadsheet is aimed at a particular audience, the provocative words encapsulate several key aspects of recent academic debates, in Australia and elsewhere, that have focused on the future of the PhD.
