Introduction : Introduction
In this part of the Handbook, the contributors consider the design and development of new media as technologies per se. In terms of the definition of new media given in the Introduction to the volume, all three aspects of media technology – artifacts or devices, communication activities or practices, and social arrangements or organizations – are implicated, but in this part we place a bit more emphasis on the first aspect, the built systems. The authors range widely across frameworks for understanding new media design, development and use; in some cases, they build on these existing frameworks to propose new frameworks of their own.
