Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is an umbrella term for a number of different diseases or medical conditions. This is often confusing, both to the counselor and to the client, because reported statistics are based on a different combination of diagnoses and different terms are used for similar conditions. For example, the American Heart Association (AHA), which provides excellent, reliable, and accessible information on the Web (http://americanheart.org), reports “total cardiovascular diseases” referring to all diseases of the circulatory system.
