Colleges and Universities, Community Policing Strategies for

Community policing is well suited to colleges and universities, which are designed to promote a culture of academic inquiry, engagement, outreach, and openness among students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Community-oriented policing and problem-solving strategies are in keeping with this philosophy.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office), defines community policing as “a philosophy that promotes organizational strategies, which support the systematic use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques, to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime.”
