[Page 286]Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in Europe and worldwide. The epidemiology of heart disease varies, however, significantly between European countries. According to the World Health Organization, the incidence of cardiovascular-related deaths per 100,000 people is higher in both Germany and the UK than in France and Italy. These national variations are a result of differences in hereditary factors, lifestyle choices, living standards, diet, smoking, and alcohol consumption patterns. Smoking, physical inactivity, and unhealthy diet greatly increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Continued growth in the European elderly demographic will also contribute to increased incidence of cardiovascular disease over the next 5 years.
