In 2003, the Asian ophthalmic device market was valued at over $500 million. Driven primarily by an increasing number of ophthalmic surgery procedures, arising from a developing Chinese economy as well as improving economic conditions in Japan and South Korea, the demand for ophthalmic devices will increase over the forecast period. Market growth will, however, be primarily limited by strong downward pricing pressure due to increasing competition and declining reimbursement rates in Japan and South Korea.
